All-Season SUV Tires Versus All-Weather SUV Tires

Having recently bought an SUV and being fortunate enough to live in California I started looking into buying an all-round tire that can be used year round. So, I decided to look into an all-season tire not understanding the difference between an SUV all-season tire and an SUV all-weather tire.

The all-season SUV tires are basically made to be driven all-year around. This however is only partially true as it depends very much on the place where you live. All-season tires cannot handle cold and severe winter conditions. All-weather tires on the other hand combine the best properties of dedicated summer tires and winter tires, so they handle better on wet, snowy and icy winter roads.

However, since I live in San Diego, I decided to go for the Nokian Rotiiva AT (All Terrain) plus tire. This durable all-season tire provides durability without compromising safety or driving comfort. It performs great on asphalt – the surface on which I drive mostly. Even though it does perform well on asphalt, it doesn’t mean it can’t handle the occasional light off-road trip when I visit my daughter’s ranch. Also, with its aggressive tread pattern I know it will be able to grip the road. The stability is improved with the new re-optimized placement of the tread blocks with enforced shoulder areas.

This tire will assure that we get the most use of our SUV tires as it has cooling ribs that reduce the heat generation and thereby slowing the wear of the tire. The tire is equipped with 3D siping which also improve the grip, making the tread block sturdier.

Having said all this, SUV all season tires like the Nokian Rotiiva HT would have been a good tire option for our SUV. In the end we decided though to go for the Nokian Rotiiva AT plus tire because of its cooling ribs which offer slower tire wear. I hope  we can keep them longer without having to change them.

All-season tires are perfect for anyone living in southern California or any other part of the country enjoying mild climate year round. What All-Season Tires Are Suitable For An Electric SUV?

Spring is emerging here in Vail, Colorado and I am starting to look for SUV all-season tires suitable for our Tesla Model X to replace our winter tires. Having been very satisfied with our Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 SUV winter tires we decided to stay with the same manufacturer. We were told that the Nokian eNTYRE C/S would be a good choice.

I don’t understand all the specifics of these technologies however it all adds up to a smooth, stable, durable and safe ride. I am impressed how well these tires perform  on wet and snow surfaces.

One very cool feature of this tire is the “Driving Safety Indicator (DSI)” which indicates in percentages as the tire wears out. Along with those numbers, there is also a waterdrop symbol that  lets the driver know of the decreased hydroplaning performance. This is a very important feature as hydroplaning or slushplaning can be very serious and quite frightening, I speak from experience. Also, with the heavier weight of SUVs and electric SUVs hydroplaning protection is very important.

I had decided on a SUV all season tires as I was told that they were mostly good for all other seasons than winter. However after reading all about the Nokian eNTYRE C/S with all it’s advanced technologies I believe that I would have been able to keep these all-season tires almost all year around. I also looked at SUV all-weather tires, which I understood where basically somewhere between all-season tires and winter tires. Since I already had invested in winter tires, I thought it would make more sense to go for an all-season as it was explained to me that they were really made for spring, fall and summer.

With the SUV all-season tires mounted on our Tesla Model X, it’s time to hit the road and enjoy our Tesla. Let’s see how well the tire works on all this melted snow and in the summer on wet rainy roads. Good thing is that with this combination of tires that I have, I don’t have to worry too much about changing tires too late or too early, as I will be safe all-year around.
